PEG TUBE FEEDING PROBABLY SAVED MICHAEL'S LIFE
A PEG tube is a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube.
The picture to the left is the PEG tube. It was inserted through his mouth while he was under a general anaesthetic. Food and medications were passed through the tube directly into his stomach.
The picture to the left shows liquid food being pumped into the PEG tube. It also shows another side-effect that Michael experienced - the blistering and peeling of the soles of his feet.
This is Michael's sister Beryl who is a dietician. She recommended insertion of a PEG tube for Michael and looked after Michael's food intake throughout his treatment and long after it finished. PEG feeding offers a lot of advantages not the least of which is minimising dental caries. Beryl also arranged for a speech therapist to help when Michael began to talk again. Beryl also arranged Michael's entry into a rehabilition exercise regimen to build up his strength. It is a pity that every patient doesn't have a sister like Beryl.
