The most distressing side effect for me was the radiation burns that Michael experienced towards the end of his treatment. It looked so painful but he wrote me a note (because he couldn't talk) which said that that the outside was a walk in the park compared to what was going on the inside of the throat.

Other side-effects included fingernails and toenails falling off.
